What is Food Security

Food Security is the state of having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.

"Food security is defined as the availability of food and one's access to it. A household is considered food secure when its occupants do not live in hunger or fear of starvation. Stages of food insecurity range from food secure situations to full-scale famine. The World Food Summit of 1996 defined food security as existing "when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life".

Household food security exists when all members, at all times, have access to enough food for an active, healthy life. Food security incorporates a measure of resilience to future disruption or unavailability of critical food supply due to various risk factors including droughts, shipping disruptions, fuel shortages, economic instability, and wars."

What threatens food security in South Africa?

Lack of money and infrastructure as well as the abundance of poverty. The main threats to food security are (1) world population growth, (2) the increase demand for food, (3) food price, (4) the disappearance of the variety of agricultural plant species (5) the increase in the area of scarcity water and the limitation of the availability of land and (6) the food losses and food waste.

How a window farm will increase food security:

having a window farm is a fantastic idea and if you already have one then you are a great person, having a window farm rally helps improve food security because you will be growing a  sufficient amount of healthy food for yourself and with the added humus it will be insanely good for you. Another really good reason to have a window farm is that you will be helping the enviroment by recycling old bottles to make your plant pots that the plant will sit in, so having a window garden is and amazing thing for you and the earth.
